What is Local Pack?
The block of three business listings with a map that appears above organic results for searches with local intent.
Ranking factors: relevance, distance, prominence
A worked example
A search for "orthodontist chembur" returns a map with three clinics above every organic result. The clinic ranking fourth is technically on page one and is effectively invisible, because almost nobody expands the list.
Why it matters
For a business with a physical location, the local pack is usually the most valuable placement in search, and it sits above everything including paid ads in many result layouts. Three positions exist. Fourth place is a different business outcome entirely.
Google names three factors. Relevance is how well your profile matches the query, which you control through categories, services and attributes. Distance is how close you are to the searcher, which you cannot change. Prominence is how well known and well reviewed you are, which you build over time.
Two of the three respond to work, and that work is unglamorous: an exactly correct primary category, a complete profile, real photographs added regularly, and a genuine review process. Clinics and restaurants that treat this as a monthly routine consistently outrank better-known competitors who set the profile up once and left it.
The nuance most people miss
Distance is measured from the searcher, not from the centre of the area they typed. Someone standing in one part of Chembur and someone in another will see different packs for the same query, which means there is no single "our ranking" to report. This also caps what optimisation can achieve: past a certain radius you will not appear in the pack regardless of how strong your profile is, and organic local pages become the route to that area instead.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a primary category that is nearly right rather than exactly right
- Reporting a single local ranking when the pack varies by where the searcher stands
- Letting duplicate listings split reviews and confuse the signals
- Expecting pack visibility far outside the catchment, where distance caps what is possible
