What is Search Intent?

What a person is actually trying to accomplish when they type a query, as distinct from the words they used.

Formula Four types: informational, navigational, commercial, transactional

A worked example

"Dental implants" wants an explanation of the procedure. "Dental implant cost mumbai" wants prices. "Dental implant clinic chembur" wants a clinic to call. Three queries about one subject, needing three different pages. A single page attempting all three ranks for none of them well.

Why it matters

Matching intent is the difference between a page that ranks and a page that gets ignored, and it is decided before you write a word. Google has already learned what searchers wanted from each query, and it shows the format that satisfied them. If the results for your target term are all comparison articles and you publish a product page, you are arguing with evidence Google has collected from millions of people.

The commercial consequence shows up in conversion rate. Informational traffic converts poorly and that is not a failure: those visitors were not ready. Ranking for "what is answer engine optimisation" builds authority and email signups. Ranking for "aeo agency india" produces enquiries. Both belong in a strategy, and they need different pages and different measurement.

The practical method takes ten minutes. Search the term, look at what ranks, and note the format: guides, product pages, comparisons, local listings, videos. That is Google telling you the intent directly.

The nuance most people miss

Intent can be mixed, and mixed-intent queries are where opportunity usually sits. A search like "crm software" returns product pages, comparison articles and definitions together, because searchers want different things and Google hedges. When results are mixed, a page that satisfies the dominant intent while briefly serving the others can outrank pure plays. Intent also shifts over time, particularly in fast-moving categories, so a page built for last year's result set can quietly stop matching.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the page before looking at what currently ranks for the term
  • Targeting informational keywords and then judging the page on enquiries it was never going to produce
  • Building one page for a keyword cluster spanning three different intents
  • Ignoring that the result set for a term has changed since the page was written
FAQ

Follow-up questions

  • Search the term and study the results. The formats Google chooses to show are the clearest available statement of what searchers wanted, and it costs nothing to check.

  • Sometimes, where the query itself is mixed. Where intents are clearly distinct, separate pages perform better and avoid competing with each other.
