Local SEO: Winning the Three Results That Matter

For a business with a location, the local pack sits above everything else and a large share of searches never produce a website visit at all. The customer calls, gets directions, or reads reviews and decides, entirely inside Google.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work of ranking in the map results and local pack for searches with local intent, the three business listings that appear above the organic results for queries like "dentist near me" or "CA firm in Chembur". It is driven by three factors: proximity to the searcher, prominence of your business, and relevance of your listing to the query. Proximity you cannot change. The other two are almost entirely within your control, and most businesses neglect both.

Google Business Profile is free, and for most businesses with a physical location it is the single highest-return marketing asset available. It is also the one most often left half-finished: a profile created once, a category chosen in thirty seconds, a handful of photos from three years ago, and no review process at all.

The work is unglamorous and it compounds. Exact category selection, complete attributes and services, photographs added on a schedule, posts written in the language customers actually search with, and a genuine, sustained review process. None of it is clever. All of it is measurable, and it is why a well-run profile consistently outranks a better-known competitor two streets away.

Scope

What the work covers

Not a feature list. These are the areas where the work actually changes the outcome.

01

Category strategy

The primary category is the highest-leverage decision on the entire profile, and most businesses get it slightly wrong. Choosing a category that is nearly right rather than exactly right quietly costs you visibility on your most valuable queries, and the loss is invisible because you never see the searches you did not appear in. We check what the profiles currently outranking you use, then set primary and secondary categories deliberately.

02

Profile completeness

Services, products, attributes, opening hours including holiday hours, booking links, service areas and business description. Google rewards completeness and the Products feature in particular drives the "Explore categories" chips that appear in the panel. A placement most competitors have not filled.

03

Review generation and response

Reviews are a process you run, not something that happens to you. We build the request flow into your existing customer touchpoints, so asking is systematic rather than occasional, and we handle response. Recency and reply rate matter alongside raw volume. A profile with forty recent reviews and consistent replies frequently outperforms one with two hundred old ones.

04

Posts and photos

Weekly posts using the exact language customers search with, and real photographs added on a schedule rather than in one batch at setup. Posts have a modest direct ranking effect and a real indirect one: they keep the profile active and occupy more of the panel.

05

Q&A seeding

The Questions and Answers section can be populated by anyone, including a competitor. Most businesses have never looked at it. We seed it with the questions customers genuinely ask and answer them properly.

06

Duplicate and suspension handling

Duplicate listings fragment reviews and confuse ranking signals. Suspensions, whether justified or not, take a business off the map entirely. We consolidate duplicates and handle reinstatement where needed.

07

Citations and NAP consistency

Name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear across directories, listings and your own site. Inconsistency fragments your entity and it is a slow, tedious fix that genuinely matters.

08

Local landing pages

Where a business serves multiple areas, pages built for each that are genuinely different rather than templated with the city name swapped. Google recognises the latter immediately and it does not work.

How it runs

The sequence

In this order, because each step depends on what the previous one found.

  1. 01

Audit the profile and the competition

We document your current profile against the businesses ranking above you. Categories, review counts and recency, post cadence, photo volume, attributes filled. This usually explains the gap on its own.

  2. 02

    Fix the foundation

Categories, services, attributes, hours, description, NAP consistency and duplicate consolidation. This is the work that produces most of the movement and it happens in the first fortnight.

  3. 03

    Build the review engine

A repeatable request process wired into how you already contact customers, with response handled so it does not depend on someone remembering.

  4. 04

    Sustain and measure

Weekly posts, monthly photos, Q&A maintenance, and reporting on the metric that matters, discovery searches versus direct searches. Rising discovery share means new customers are finding you, which is the whole point.

What you receive

Deliverables

Profile audit and competitive comparison

Where you stand against the profiles currently outranking you, item by item.

Fully optimised profile

Categories, services, products, attributes, hours and description completed properly.

Review generation system

A request flow built into your existing customer contact, plus response handling.

Monthly reporting

Discovery versus direct searches, calls, direction requests, review velocity and post performance.

How this is scoped and charged

Local SEO runs as a monthly retainer because posts, reviews, photos and Q&A are ongoing work, a profile optimised once and abandoned decays within months. Multi-location businesses are quoted per location with a reduction beyond the first few, since the systems are shared. The initial audit and foundation fix can be taken as a standalone project if you want to run the ongoing work in-house afterwards.

FAQ

Questions we get asked about this

  • Enough to be credible relative to the profiles currently above you, look at what they have rather than chasing a number. Recency and reply rate matter alongside volume, and a steady trickle beats a burst, which can look manipulated.

  • In the local pack, generally no. Proximity is a genuine factor and Google verifies addresses. You can rank organically for that area with a properly built local page, which is a different and slower route. Anyone offering to place a fake address is offering to get your listing suspended.

  • The direct ranking effect is small. The indirect effect is real: posts keep the profile active, take up more space in the panel, and let you use the exact phrasing customers search with. Weekly is worth doing; daily is not.

  • Suspensions usually follow a category change, an address edit, or a competitor report. We handle reinstatement, which requires documentation rather than argument. It is faster if nothing questionable was done in the first place.
