Google Merchant Center

The platform where you submit product data to Google so it can appear in Shopping ads and free product listings.

What is Google Merchant Center?

The platform where you submit product data to Google so it can appear in Shopping ads and free product listings.

A worked example

A store submits its feed and finds half the catalogue disapproved. The causes are a missing return policy in account settings, prices that differ between feed and landing page, and products with no GTIN or brand attribute. None of these are advertising problems, and all of them stop advertising entirely.

Why it matters

Merchant Center sits underneath every Shopping campaign and Performance Max campaign, which means feed health caps everything downstream. A disapproved product cannot be advertised no matter how good the campaign structure is, and partial disapprovals are easy to miss because the account still spends.

The approval requirements catch out most Indian stores in the same few places. Return and refund policy must be stated in account settings and match the site. Prices and availability in the feed must match the landing page exactly, including tax treatment. Contact details and a working checkout are checked. Certain categories carry additional requirements.

Getting this right is unglamorous and it is the difference between Shopping working and not existing. Feed quality also does the work keywords used to do, since titles and attributes determine which searches your products can appear for.

The nuance most people miss

Price and availability mismatches are the most common recurring cause of disapproval, and they usually arise from timing rather than error. A feed refreshed daily against a site running frequent promotions will drift out of sync, and Google checks the landing page directly. Automated updates or a more frequent fetch schedule fix this, whereas re-submitting the same feed does not. Set up email alerts for disapprovals, because the account will keep spending on the products that remain approved and nothing will draw your attention to the ones that stopped.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the return policy unset in account settings, which blocks approval entirely
  • Feed prices that drift out of sync with landing page prices during promotions
  • Titles written for internal SKU naming rather than for how customers search
  • Ignoring partial disapprovals because the account still appears to be running
FAQ

Follow-up questions

  • Usually a missing or inconsistent return policy, a price or availability mismatch between feed and landing page, or missing required attributes. The diagnostics panel names the specific reason for each product.

  • It is worth having, since free product listings appear in the Shopping tab and elsewhere at no media cost. The feed work is the same either way.
