What is Schema Markup?

Structured data written in JSON-LD that tells search engines and AI models what the content of a page actually means, in a machine-readable form.

A worked example

A dental clinic adds LocalBusiness schema declaring its address, opening hours, geo coordinates, accepted payment methods and services offered. Nothing changes visually on the page, but the information is now unambiguous to Google, to Bing and to any language model retrieving the page.

Why it matters

Schema does not directly raise rankings, and any agency telling you otherwise is selling something. What it does is enable rich results, star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, product prices, event details, and materially improve how AI answer engines parse and attribute your content. That second function is where schema has quietly become much more valuable than it used to be.

When a language model retrieves your page, well-formed schema removes ambiguity. It knows this is a product, that is a price, this is an organisation with these credentials, that is the answer to this question. Pages that make this explicit are easier to quote accurately, and accurate quotability is the whole game in answer engine optimisation.

The types that earn their keep for most Indian businesses are Organization or LocalBusiness at site level, Product with offers for e-commerce, FAQPage for question content, Article for editorial, and BreadcrumbList for navigation. Beyond those the returns diminish quickly.

The nuance most people miss

Schema must describe content that is actually visible on the page. Marking up reviews that do not appear, or FAQ content the visitor cannot see, is a guidelines violation and Google does act on it. The other frequent failure is deploying schema and never validating it. A single malformed field can invalidate the entire block, and it fails silently. Run every template through the Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator after any change, and check again after theme or plugin updates, which routinely break it.

Common mistakes

  • Marking up content that is not visible on the page, which is a guidelines violation
  • Deploying schema without validating it, then assuming it works
  • Using a generic Organization type where a specific subtype exists and carries more meaning
  • Letting schema drift out of sync with the page after content edits
FAQ

Follow-up questions

  • Organization or LocalBusiness for the site, BreadcrumbList across templates, and FAQPage on pages that genuinely answer questions. For e-commerce add Product with valid offers. That covers most of the available value.

  • Partly. Rank Math and Yoast generate reasonable defaults, but they cannot know your specific service structure or which subtype fits. Expect to supplement plugin output with custom JSON-LD for anything specific to your business.
