Quality Score

A Google Ads diagnostic scored from 1 to 10 that estimates how relevant your keyword, ad and landing page are to a searcher.

Components: expected CTR, ad relevance, landing page experience

What is Quality Score?

A Google Ads diagnostic scored from 1 to 10 that estimates how relevant your keyword, ad and landing page are to a searcher.

Formula Components: expected CTR, ad relevance, landing page experience

A worked example

Two advertisers bid on "invisalign clinic mumbai". One sends the click to a general dentistry homepage and scores 4. The other has an Invisalign page answering cost, duration and eligibility, and scores 9. The second advertiser can appear above the first while paying less per click.

Why it matters

Quality Score is the closest thing Google Ads has to a discount for doing the work properly. It feeds Ad Rank, which decides both whether you appear and what you pay, so a strong score genuinely lowers your cost per click on the same bid. A weak score means you are subsidising your competitors by paying more for the same position.

The three components tell you where the problem sits. Expected click-through rate is about whether your ad answers the query. Ad relevance is about whether the keyword, the ad text and the search actually match. Landing page experience is about whether the page delivers what the ad promised, loads quickly and works on a phone.

The reason this matters commercially is compounding. A better score lowers cost per click, which buys more clicks on the same budget, which produces more conversion data, which improves bidding. Accounts with disciplined structure pull away from sloppy ones over time for exactly this reason.

The nuance most people miss

Quality Score is a diagnostic, not a scoreboard, and chasing the number itself leads people astray. It is reported at keyword level and updates on impressions, so a keyword with very few impressions shows a placeholder score that means nothing. The account-level average that many agencies report is not a real Google metric at all: it is a weighted calculation the agency chose. Look at the three component ratings on your highest-spend keywords and fix whichever says "below average".

Common mistakes

  • Reporting an account-level average, which Google does not publish and which hides the keywords that matter
  • Reading a score on a keyword with almost no impressions, where the figure is a placeholder
  • Fixing ad copy when the component flagged as below average is landing page experience
  • Cramming many loosely related keywords into one ad group, which guarantees weak ad relevance
FAQ

Follow-up questions

  • It feeds Ad Rank, which determines position and actual cost per click. A stronger score can let you hold the same position at a lower bid, so the effect on cost is real even though there is no explicit discount.

  • Seven and above on your commercial keywords is healthy. Below five signals a genuine mismatch somewhere between keyword, ad and landing page, and the component ratings will tell you which.
