AI Overviews

Google's AI-generated answers that appear above traditional results, synthesising information from multiple sources with citations.

What is AI Overviews?

Google's AI-generated answers that appear above traditional results, synthesising information from multiple sources with citations.

A worked example

Someone searches "how to reduce RTO in ecommerce". An AI Overview appears first, summarising prepaid incentives, OTP confirmation and pincode restrictions, citing three sources. The user reads the summary, gets what they needed, and never clicks anything. Your page was cited and received no visit.

Why it matters

AI Overviews change what a ranking is worth. A page can hold position two and lose a substantial share of its traffic because the answer now appears above it, fully formed. The position did not move; the click did.

The response that works is being the cited source, since a citation carries brand visibility and authority even without a visit. Content structured for extraction gets quoted more readily: a direct answer near the top, question-shaped headings, specific figures rather than generalities, and valid schema removing ambiguity about what the page says.

The effect is uneven, which matters for planning. Informational and definitional queries are heavily affected. Transactional and local queries much less so, because someone searching "dentist near me" still needs to choose and contact a clinic. Categories built on explaining things are losing more traffic than categories built on selling things.

The nuance most people miss

Rankings and traffic have decoupled, and reporting that only tracks position will miss the decline entirely. A site can hold its rankings and lose a third of its informational traffic while every rank-tracking report stays green. Watch impressions against clicks in Search Console: rising impressions with flat or falling clicks is the fingerprint of answers being satisfied before the click. That gap is the number to report, not average position.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting rankings while clicks fall, and missing the decline entirely
  • Burying the answer beneath a long introduction, which makes the page harder to quote
  • Blocking AI crawlers by default and then wondering why the site is never cited
  • Assuming the effect is uniform, when local and transactional queries are far less affected
FAQ

Follow-up questions

  • You can block AI crawlers in robots.txt, which removes the possibility of being cited at all. For most businesses that trades a small traffic loss for a complete visibility loss, which is the wrong direction.

  • Answer the question directly and early, use question-shaped headings, include specific verifiable detail, deploy accurate schema, and keep content current. There is no guaranteed method and anyone selling one is overstating it.
