When the Plugin You Need Does Not Exist

When a requirement does not map to something on the plugin marketplace, it usually becomes a limitation you are asked to accept. We write the code instead.

What is custom plugin development?

Custom plugin development is writing bespoke WordPress or WooCommerce functionality as a self-contained plugin, rather than assembling it from marketplace plugins or hard-coding it into a theme. Building it as a plugin matters: the functionality survives a theme change, can be version-controlled and updated independently, and can be switched off without breaking the site. It is how you get software behaviour out of a CMS.

This is the part of our work that has almost no agency competition in India, and it exists because we kept hitting the same wall. A client needs partner commission tracking, or a subscription rule the plugin does not support, or a verification system for certificates, and the honest options are to change the business process to fit the software or to write software that fits the business.

We have built production plugins across commission and partner systems, subscription and delivery logistics, certificate generation and verification, AI-assisted product tools, and internal reporting. Some run our own brands, some run client businesses. All of them exist because nothing on the marketplace did the job.

Scope

What the work covers

Not a feature list. These are the areas where the work actually changes the outcome.

01

Partner and reseller portals

Separate logins, role-based dashboards, commission calculation and tracking, payout records, address and territory management. Effectively a second application living inside WordPress, with its own permissions and its own data model.

02

Commission and incentive engines

Percentage or tiered commission on tracked orders, cumulative progression, level systems and reporting for both the business and the partner. The logic is usually specific enough to your commercial arrangement that no generic plugin fits.

03

Subscription and recurring logic

Where WooCommerce Subscriptions does not cover the requirement: delivery slots, service areas, pause and skip rules, delivery-person panels, and recurring payment handling through Indian gateways including mandate and renewal edge cases.

04

Verification and certificate systems

Auto-generated reference numbers, QR-based public verification, batch printing to specific paper layouts, and tamper-evident records. Relevant to labs, certification bodies, warranties and authentication.

05

Custom admin tools

Reporting, bulk operations, imports and internal dashboards that answer the questions your team actually asks, rather than the ones a generic analytics plugin was designed for.

06

API integrations

Connecting WordPress to systems that do not have an existing plugin: CRMs, ERPs, courier APIs, WhatsApp Business, payment providers and AI model providers. Including the unglamorous parts: retry logic, rate limiting, provider fallback and failure handling.

07

AI-assisted features

Where a language model genuinely improves a product experience: guided product selection, structured content generation, support assistants. Built with cost control and provider routing rather than a single hard-coded dependency.

08

Performance and maintainability

Plugins written to load only where needed rather than sitewide, with proper hooks, sanitised inputs, prepared queries and documentation. A custom plugin that is slow or insecure is worse than no plugin.

How it runs

The sequence

In this order, because each step depends on what the previous one found.

  1. 01

    Specify the actual requirement

Usually the hardest step. What the business needs to happen, what the edge cases are, and who uses it. Most failed custom builds fail here rather than in code.

  2. 02

    Check whether it already exists

We will tell you if a mature plugin does the job. Buying a well-maintained plugin is almost always cheaper than commissioning one, and we would rather say so than take the work.

  3. 03

    Build and test

Written as a self-contained plugin, tested against real data and real edge cases including failure paths. What happens when the payment webhook does not arrive, when the API is down, when two users act at once.

  4. 04

    Document and hand over

Code documented, admin usage documented, and the plugin yours. If you later want another developer to maintain it, they can.

What you receive

Deliverables

A self-contained plugin

Survives theme changes, can be disabled without breaking the site, version-controlled.

Documentation

Both technical and for whoever administers it day to day.

Full ownership

The code is yours. No licence, no per-seat fee, no dependency on us continuing.

Failure handling

Retry, fallback and logging, so a third-party outage does not silently lose data.

How this is scoped and charged

Custom plugin work is quoted per project after specification, because scope is the entire variable, a small admin tool and a full partner portal with commission logic are not comparable. We usually charge for the specification phase separately and credit it against the build, since a proper spec is genuinely half the work and is useful even if you take it to another developer. Ongoing maintenance is optional.

FAQ

Questions we get asked about this

  • Less risky than a marketplace plugin being abandoned, which happens constantly. You own the code, it is documented, and it is written in standard WordPress patterns any competent developer can pick up. We are not the only people who can maintain it and we do not build it so that we are.

  • Usually yes, and we will tell you when that is the case. Custom work is worth it when the requirement is specific to how your business operates, when you are paying for several plugins to approximate one thing, or when the workaround costs staff time every week.

  • Often, through its hooks and filters, which is cheaper and safer than replacing it. Where a plugin has no extension points we will say so. Modifying plugin files directly is not maintainable and we will not do it.

  • A focused admin tool is typically one to three weeks. A partner portal with commission logic, roles and reporting is a multi-month project. The specification phase determines this and we scope after it, not before.
