WordPress vs Website Builders for Indian Businesses

Wix, Squarespace and similar against WordPress. Where builders are genuinely the right call, and where the ceiling arrives sooner than you expect.

The short answer

Use a website builder if the site is a brochure, you want it live this week, and nobody on your team wants to think about maintenance. Use WordPress if the site is a business asset you will extend. Content at scale, custom functionality, integrations, or e-commerce beyond the basics. Builders are genuinely good now and the snobbery about them is out of date. The real question is whether you will hit their ceiling, and if you will, moving later is more expensive than starting right.

What is the difference between WordPress and a website builder?

A website builder such as Wix or Squarespace is a hosted, all-in-one service: they run the servers, provide the editor and templates, and charge a monthly fee. WordPress is self-hosted open-source software you install on hosting you buy, giving you full control of the code and database along with full responsibility for updates, security and backups. Builders trade flexibility for convenience; WordPress trades convenience for ownership and an unlimited ceiling.

The honest starting point is that modern builders are far better than their reputation. For a small business that needs a credible five-page site with a contact form, a builder will produce something good-looking quickly, keep it secure without anyone thinking about it, and cost less in total than a WordPress build plus maintenance.

The problems arrive later and specifically. You want a custom booking flow, a members area, a particular integration, a content structure the templates do not support, or SEO control the platform does not expose. At that point there is no route forward inside the builder, and migrating means rebuilding.

Side by side

Where each one wins

The considerations that actually change the decision, rather than a feature list.

Consideration WordPress Website builders
Time to launch Weeks, with design work Days
Ongoing cost Hosting plus maintenance, variable Predictable monthly subscription
Maintenance burden Yours. Updates, backups, security None. Handled by the platform
Customisation ceiling None. If it can be coded, it can be built Real, and reached sooner than most expect
SEO control Complete: URLs, schema, robots, redirects Adequate for basics, limited for anything advanced
Content at scale Strong. Custom post types, taxonomies, structured content Weak beyond a modest number of pages
E-commerce WooCommerce: unlimited, India-specific logic possible Built-in and adequate for simple catalogues
Integrations Anything with an API. Custom plugins where none exists Limited to the platform's app marketplace
Ownership and portability Full. Code, database, move hosts freely None. The site cannot leave the platform
Exit cost Low. Move hosting, keep everything High. Migration is a rebuild
Deciding

Which one is yours

WordPress

Choose WordPress when

  • The site will grow. Content at scale, multiple templates, structured content types
  • You need custom functionality or integrations the platform does not offer
  • SEO or AEO control matters, down to schema and URL structure
  • You are running e-commerce with anything beyond a simple catalogue
  • You want to own the asset outright with no platform dependency
Website builders

Choose a website builder when

  • The site is a brochure: a few pages, a contact form, credibility
  • Nobody on your team will maintain a self-hosted site, and that is a realistic assessment
  • You need to be live quickly with a limited budget
  • You are validating a business and may not still need the site in a year
  • Predictable monthly cost matters more than long-term flexibility

The migration cost nobody prices in

Starting on a builder and moving to WordPress later is a rebuild, not a migration. Content can be moved with effort; the design, the layouts and any platform-specific functionality cannot. If there is a reasonable chance you will need custom functionality within two years, the cheaper path is usually to build on WordPress now, even a simple one, rather than pay for the site twice. Conversely, if the site genuinely is a brochure and will stay one, a builder is the better commercial decision and choosing WordPress for it means paying for maintenance you did not need.

Our take

What we would actually do

Builder for a brochure site with no growth plan and no maintenance capacity. WordPress for anything that is a business asset rather than a business card. The condition that decides it honestly: ask whether anyone will actually maintain a self-hosted site. An unmaintained WordPress install is a security liability, and if the honest answer is that nobody will, a builder is genuinely the better choice regardless of the ceiling.

FAQ

Questions that follow this one

  • It gives you more control, particularly over schema, redirects and URL structure. But Wix sites rank perfectly well, and most sites are limited by their content and authority rather than their platform. Do not choose on SEO alone.

  • Over two or three years, often yes, once you count WordPress hosting, a theme, backups, security and maintenance time. The saving disappears if you outgrow the builder and have to rebuild.

  • You can move the content, with effort. You cannot move the design or any platform-specific functionality. It is a rebuild. Budget accordingly and plan the redirect map carefully to protect existing rankings.

  • A middle path: the visual editing convenience of a builder with WordPress underneath, so the ceiling stays high. Worth considering if the editing experience is the main attraction of a hosted builder.
