Search AdsvsPerformance Max

Google Search Ads vs Performance Max

Control against reach inside the same platform. When automation genuinely outperforms, when it quietly wastes budget, and why the answer is usually to run both.

The short answer

Run a standard Search campaign on your clearest commercial terms and Performance Max alongside it for reach, that combination beats either alone in most accounts. Search gives you explicit control over match types, messaging and negatives. Performance Max gives you inventory Search cannot reach, but it needs clean conversion data, a good product feed and firm brand exclusions to be worth having. If your tracking is not verified, do not run Performance Max at all.

What is the difference between Search Ads and Performance Max?

A standard Search campaign shows text ads against keywords you choose, with match types, negative keywords and bids you control directly. Performance Max serves across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one asset set, with Google deciding placement, audience and bidding. Search is a scalpel with limited reach. Performance Max is a wide net you can steer but not aim.

The framing that causes trouble is treating this as old versus new, where Performance Max is assumed to be the upgrade. It is not an upgrade; it is a different tool with a different failure mode. Search fails visibly. You can see the wasted search terms. Performance Max fails invisibly, which is why accounts can run it badly for months.

The most common expensive mistake is running Performance Max without brand exclusions. It will absorb people searching your brand name, convert them at an excellent rate because they were already coming, and report a return that makes it look like your best campaign. The incremental value is close to zero and the reporting will not tell you.

Side by side

Where each one wins

The considerations that actually change the decision, rather than a feature list.

Consideration Search Ads Performance Max
Control High. Keywords, match types, negatives, bids, ad copy Low. Signals and exclusions only. You steer, not aim
Reach Search results only Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps
Data required to work Modest. Can run usefully from day one Substantial. Needs conversion history and a clean feed
Diagnosability Good. Search term reports show exactly what you paid for Limited. Placement and term visibility is partial at best
Suits new accounts Yes. This should be your first campaign No. Wait for conversion volume
Suits e-commerce Yes, for high-intent terms Yes. It is now the primary Shopping vehicle
Suits lead generation Strongly. Intent is explicit Sometimes. Lead quality varies and needs close watching
Brand term risk You control it directly with keywords and negatives Absorbs brand traffic unless exclusions are applied
Creative requirement Low. Text assets Higher. Images, video, headlines, descriptions per asset group
Fails by Wasting spend on visible bad search terms Optimising confidently toward the wrong signal, invisibly
Deciding

Which one is yours

Search Ads

Weight toward Search when

  • The account is new and has no conversion history to learn from
  • You are generating leads rather than selling products, and lead quality matters more than volume
  • Your budget is small enough that you need every rupee on explicit intent
  • You need to control exactly what message appears against which query
  • Your category has legal, medical or regulatory sensitivity where copy control matters
Performance Max

Weight toward Performance Max when

  • You have a product feed and e-commerce conversion volume for it to learn from
  • You have exhausted Search volume and need reach beyond the keyword ceiling
  • You can produce image and video assets per asset group and refresh them
  • Conversion tracking is verified against backend orders, not assumed
  • You want Shopping inventory, which is now largely delivered through this campaign type

How to run them together

Keep a standard Search campaign on your highest-intent commercial terms: exact and phrase match, tightly negatived. Run Performance Max alongside with brand terms excluded, so it is buying incremental reach rather than claiming credit for traffic you already owned. Search generally wins the auction on terms where you have an exact keyword match, so the two coexist rather than cannibalising, provided the brand exclusion is in place. Review search terms in the Search campaign weekly and feed the good ones back; review Performance Max at asset group level monthly, because faster than that you are reacting to noise.

Our take

What we would actually do

Start with Search, always. Add Performance Max once you have verified tracking and enough conversion volume for it to learn, then run both permanently with brand exclusions applied. The condition that flips it: for pure e-commerce with a strong feed and meaningful volume, Performance Max may end up carrying most of the budget, and that is fine as long as Search still covers your highest-intent terms. The condition that should stop you entirely: if you cannot reconcile reported conversions against real backend orders, Performance Max will amplify whatever error exists in your tracking, confidently and expensively.

FAQ

Questions that follow this one

  • Not significantly if brand exclusions are applied and your Search campaign uses exact and phrase match on its core terms. Google generally serves the Search campaign where you have a matching keyword. Without brand exclusions, cannibalisation is severe and disguised as good performance.

  • Almost always because it is absorbing branded and remarketing traffic that would have converted anyway. Apply brand exclusions and watch the reported return fall to something closer to the truth.

  • Only partially. Asset group structure and supplementary reporting recover some visibility, but full placement transparency is not available. This is a genuine limitation worth accounting for rather than working around.

  • Enough to gather conversion signal within a few weeks. Starving it produces erratic results and prolongs learning. If your total budget is small, put it behind Search instead and add Performance Max later.
