What is the difference between hiring a freelancer and an agency?
A freelancer is an individual you engage directly, usually specialising in one channel, charging less because there is no overhead. An agency is a team covering several disciplines with process, redundancy and management layered on, charging more for that structure. The practical differences are breadth of skill, what happens when the person is unavailable, and whether anyone is managing the work other than you.
This decision is often framed as a budget question, and budget is genuinely part of it. A good freelancer costs meaningfully less than a comparable agency retainer. But the businesses that regret hiring a freelancer rarely regret the cost. They regret discovering that paid media, tracking, landing pages and creative all needed to move together, and one person could only move one of them.
Equally, businesses that regret hiring an agency usually did so at a scale where the agency could not justify senior attention, and they ended up paying agency rates for junior execution they could have hired directly.
